Behind the Curtain

Original Title

Derrière le rideau

The stunning testimony of a major figure in contemporary psychotherapy.

On December 24, 2000, Marie Lise Labonté's life turned upside down. Her husband was murdered just a few metres away from her while she hid behind a flimsy curtain. The ensuing trauma affected her in a variety of ways: the shock of the aggression, the survival instinct, the pain of loss, the expectations and responses by family and social services. Looking back on her own life and her role as an individual, Marie Lise Labonté opens up about her marriage, her spiritual development, the forebodings she felt before the murder and her desire to understand the man who had shattered her own life and that of her niece Julie, who was also a witness to the crime. Baring the deep wound that she has carried within herself for so long, and explaining her progress along the pathway to recovery, Labonté finally allows herself to emerge from behind the “curtain.” She casts off the victim's mask, rejects the fear of the unexplained, and stares the hidden truth in the eye, choosing life above all else.
